Review: One Foot in the Grave by Jeaniene Frost (AUDIO Version)

You can run from the grave, but you can't hide . . . Half-vampire Cat Crawfield is now Special Agent Cat Crawfield, working for the government to rid the world of the rogue undead. She's still using everything Bones, her sexy and dangerous ex, taught her, but when Cat is targeted for assassination, the only man who can help her is the vampire she left behind. Being around him awakens all her emotions, from the adrenaline kick of slaying vamps side by side to the reckless passion that consumed them. But a price on her head—wanted: dead or half-alive—means her survival depends on teaming up with Bones. And no matter how hard she tries to keep things professional between them, she'll find that desire lasts forever . . . and that Bones won't let her get away again. **Synopsis from Shelfari**
This review is for the "newly released" audio version of Jeaniene Frost's One Foot in the Grave. (Frostie fan girl squeal!!) Yes,  I know most of you have already read this book, entire series twenty times, so I will TRY to keep this short and sweet! Oh,and before I forget..What do you guys think of the cover?? Do we like long-haired Cat?

Summing it up....
One Foot in the Grave takes place around four years after book one in the Night Huntress series, Halfway to the Grave. Cat is dealing with a lot in this book, mainly her decision to leave Bones, which haunts her every day. She knows he is the love of her life, but she made a bargain with the devil, oops, I mean government, and for his safety must stay away from Bones. Yeah, that plan is working really well until she ummm bumps into him, at her BEST FRIENDS wedding! Coincidence?  Who knows! The point is, what she left behind years ago is back and he comes with a vengeance that promises to never let her go again!!

The Rundown....
Overall, I was pleasantly pleased with this book. I really like the way the narrator, Tavia Gilbert portrays Cat. Enthusiastic, Sarcastic, Sensitive, somewhat Cocky, Fearless...these are just a few of the traits I love in Cat and and she emanates them flawlessly
. Even the side characters sound pretty realistic, my favorite being Cat's nut-case of a mom, Justina. My only gripe, is the narrator's portrayal of Bones. In my mind, Bones is this hot, macho-ey man with a deep sexy, sultry voice!! When Bones comes to mind, I immediately think Man Candy. Unfortunaltey, the narrator's interpreation of Mr. Bones is a tad, wee-bit underwhelming! She gives him an English accent (sort of) that sounds like  a mix between Mary Poppins and the witch from the Wizard of Oz. And no, not the good witch Glenda, I am talking about the Wicked Witch from the West. Yeah, the creepy green one. [hunches shoulders...curls fingers and squeals...."I'm melting, I'm melting, what a world...what a world!] Shutting mouth now!!

Okay, so overall, and despite my previous Bones banter, I really did enjoy this Audio book. Sidenote- If your a newbie to the Night Huntress world, I suggest you actually read the book first. Then, if you like it as much as I do, check out the audio version! (makes the drive back and forth to work fly by:)

  1. It's so interesting to read a review of an audio book for this series! I think I would have a hard time with it because I have such a clear picture of Bones and how he sounds in my head, the Wicked Witch of the West might reduce my attraction to him;) Thanks for this review!

  2. Jenny,
Yes, the Voice for Bones is a bit distracting. Although, I wouldn't say it ruined the book! The narrator nails the voice of Cat!! I'm with you about Bones.. He's one of my favorite book Heros so naturally, when it comes to him, my expectations are super-duper high!! ;)

  3. I listened to 'Halfway to the Grave' while driving the 12 hours back and forth to Las Vegas for the meet. I totally agree with the review. The narrator does a good job with everyone except Bones! You'd think that he's important enough to be done right.

I had hoped to hear a new narrator for the following books, but I guess I won't. I hope chapter 32 isn't ruined in 'One Foot' by the squeaky voice and bad accent.

  4. I don't listen to audio books, not since I was in Kindergarden and the charlotte from Charlotte's Web sounded like an 80 year old male chain smoker... night.mares. But, I can't wait to read this book I have the whole series so I'm anxious to get to it.

  5. Gaijin Vamp,
Ahh, Chapter 32....!!!All I'm gonna say is..."voice be damned, that chapter is still smokin hot {blushes, fans myself]!

    JR,
First of all, how the heck were you able to listed to Charlotte's Web on Audio?? That is the saddest book in the whole world.. [sniffles].I still to this day, can't kill a spider!! As for audiobooks, there not my #1 choice of reading venue! I'd much rather be sitting pullside in a lounge chair with a dirty martini in one hand and a brand new paperback in the other. Unfortunately, no one will pay me to sit around and read all day!! 9 to 5 in a cubicle is my day gig... I listen to audiobooks on my drive to and from work. [i heart my iphone] Now, as for the Night Huntress series.... GET ON IT GIRL!! Seriously, this series is so awesome!! You must, must, must read this, like ASAP!!

  6. I've listened to the audio two times completely and multiple times to certain sections. I admit it took me a bit to get into some of the voices but unlike most of you I don't have a problem with the Bones voice. For a couple of reasons.

    1. Yes I'd like to hear a more masculine tone to Bones but given that the VA is female and that the book is first person female point of view a masculine voice reading the majority would put me off. So I make allowances for that.

    2. I love the cockney accent Tavia Gilbert gives to Bones. As it would fit a man raised in a whore house. He wouldn't have the cultured British Accent of someone higher in society.

    3. After listening to One For The Money in Death's Excellent Vacation - I'll take Tavia Gilbert's rendition. I really disliked that audio even though the voice is more masculine and cultured for Bones.

    4. Tavia puts a lot of emotion into the dialogue. Anyone who has heard Halfway to the Grave when Bones says "If it was your body I saw on the sodding ground." can not deny they ragged pain in that voice. Which made a so-so scene in the reading extremely powerful.

But that's just my 2 cents.

  7. Delilah,
You are right...Tavia puts alot of emotion in the dialogue. I love her as Cat. I agree with you in that Tavia is much better suited for the series than Christopher Lane, the narrator of One for the Money. As for Bones...he's one of my favorite book heroes, so naturally, I'm a little bias/harsh when it comes to judging his audio portrayal. I guess I'm just a crazy fangirl like that, lol!!

  8. Hehe...now I'm interested in hearing Tavia's spin on Bones. When reading the book, I imagine a voice similar to James Marsden's (specifically his "Spike" voice from BtVS). Yummy. ^_^

  9. Yup, Spike would be the perfect narrator for Bones!! Duh, why didn't I think of that!! [smacks self in the head]!! Good call Alisha!!

  10. That is my fear in listening to audio books is that I have a set voice in my head for Bones and hearing a different voice may throw me off a bit. As for a voice I always hear Billy Idol's voice. I think I have been tainted by Jeaniene's description of Bones as she stated that Bones is a mash up of several people including Billy Idol who I still find damn sexy as hell! LOL when I hear Billy speak I hear Bones! His voice more so now versus when he was younger. Much deeper and tougher now. :) Just some tidbit since someone mentioned Spike -- did you know Billy Idol was asked to play the role of Spike. Billy stated in an interview that once he saw the platinum blonde, British speaking vampire he thought maybe he should have taken it since it was a spitting image of him. LOL I always see bits of Bones in Billy. :)

  11. DBV,
Wow, I didn't know Billy Idol was initially offered the role of Spike!! Kudos to you for sharing that tidbit. Wouldn't it be cool if Jeaniene wrote a scene where Idol is playing in the background? Oh boy, now I'm humming "White Wedding." Thanks DBV!! Hee, Hee, lol!!

  12. Hi Kristin!

LOL! OMG that would be so cool if Jeaniene did do that. LOL I sometimes wonder if Billy knows that he plays a part in the inspiration to the development of Bones in Jeaniene's book and if not would love to have him read the series especially Chapter 32 and hear what he would have to say LOL! :)

Great talking to you Kristin and looking forward to reading more of your book reviews. :)

  13. DBV,

OMG,that's it!! Billy Idol should be the next narrator of the Night Huntress novels!! How cool would that be!! I can totally see him reading the book w/ his leather jacket on too!! HAWTNESS!!

Great talking with you as well!!!

    :), Kristin
